Hotel Sophia is a family owned Boutique Hotel in Hydra, dating back to the early 19th century
Once a commercial store, our building predates its current use as a hotel, dating back to the early 19th century. For many decades, the ground floor store was a one-stop-shop for customers from the island and the wider region, while diligent clerks unloaded goods from the warehouses above.

The name
The years passed and times changed. At the beginning of the 20th century, the store owner Loukas Tsingaris, a merchant who traveled all the way to Constantinople in his boat and a visionary before his time, conceived the idea of creating the first hotel in Hydra*.
This idea slowly matured inside him, as his decision to name the hotel also did: “Sophia”, after the name of his beloved wife, but also of his adored granddaughter, then a baby in the arms of her widowed mother.
The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Since 1934, at Hotel Sophia, one generation succeeds the other, always keeping the founder’s philosophy unchanged: Family atmosphere. Aesthetics. Authenticity. Values that for almost a century have been taking the experience of home hospitality one step further.

Today, at Hotel Sophia, the fifth generation is poised to welcome you with the same passion and enthusiasm of our predecessors. Meet our family members, Dorothea, Nikos, Angeliki, and Vasiliki, eager to make you feel like one of us.
We’ll call you by your first name, prepare a special handmade breakfast, and share it as a family at our big table. If your backpack needs mending or your ferry is delayed, we’ll fix it for you and even whip up a snack.
